Methods of radiation protection

Leadpol Sp. z o.o.

Three things limit the dose: distance from the source, time spent in the field, and shielding. The first two are a matter of how work is organised, the third of material.

Fixed shielding

The basic method in X-ray rooms and laboratories: building partitions receive a layer of radiation-absorbing material. In practice that means lead - sheet, foil, self-adhesive foil or lead-lined plasterboard - and leaded glass in the viewing windows.

The thickness is not a matter of judgement. A radiologist calculates it in the shielding design and states it as a Pb equivalent, separately for each partition, because the wall behind the machine and the wall behind the operator call for different figures.

Shielding the source

Rather than shielding a whole room, it is sometimes enough to shield the source itself or to place a barrier between it and the work position. That is how protective screens, collimator shields and operator screens work - they cut scattered radiation where people actually stand.

Personal protection

Lead aprons, thyroid collars, gonad shields, glasses and gloves. They are used where leaving the radiation field is not an option - during image-guided procedures - and to shield those parts of the patient's body that are not being examined.

How work is organised

Dose falls with the square of distance, so every metre from the source counts for more than another millimetre of lead. Limiting time in the field, moving the work position back and triggering exposures remotely therefore matter as much as the material in the wall - and cost nothing.

Testing the shield

A shield is only as good as its weakest point. Board joints, service penetrations, door frames and fixing points are the typical leak paths - which is why a finished installation is checked by measurement, not by documentation alone.

It pays to handle this during the work: joints are covered with self-adhesive lead tape, penetrations sealed with lead wool, and screw heads capped. Testing is repeated periodically, because an installation moves over time.

Need the material, or some advice?

We will match the thickness and form of the material to the Pb equivalent in your design, cut it to size and ship it across Europe. For non-standard shapes a drawing or a .dxf file is all we need.

Send us the dimensions - we will send back a quote

The type of material, the thickness and the dimensions are enough. If you need a non-standard shape, send a drawing - we accept .dxf files and dimensioned sketches.
