MILLING OF LEAD SHEETS AND PLATES
Precise machining of lead components
Besides cutting we also mill lead sheets, plates and castings. Machining gives you what cutting alone cannot: grooves, pockets, seats for fittings, bevels and chamfered edges, accurate holes and flat, square faces. The part leaves the mill ready to install, with no hand finishing needed.
Lead is a soft and ductile metal, so mechanical machining easily leads to a clogged cutting edge, burrs and deformed parts. It calls for sharp tools with the right geometry, matched feed rates and efficient chip evacuation. We have worked with this material for years and set the parameters so that the edge stays clean and the dimension repeatable, even on thin walls.
What we do
- Milling of faces and edges – flattening, squareness and parallelism of sides
- Grooves, keyways, pockets and seats for fittings, profiles and hardware
- Chamfers and bevelled edges – preparation for overlaps and joining of sheets
- Mounting holes, through and blind, cut-outs for service penetrations
- Machining of castings, ingots and counterweights to a given size and mass
Own and customer supplied material
We mill both material from our own stock – lead sheets, plates and castings – and material supplied by the customer. Parts are made from a .dxf file (AutoCAD) or a technical drawing with dimensions and tolerances. If you have no documentation, we will prepare the design from a sketch or from a sample part.
Applications
Milled lead components go above all into radiation shielding and the fit-out of X-ray and TMG rooms, where an exact fit at the joints between shields and the absence of gaps are what count. Beyond radiation protection we make parts for industry and laboratories: diaphragms, collimators, measurement seats, ballasts, counterweights and vibration damping elements.
Milling or cutting
If you need a flat blank of any contour, waterjet cutting will be faster and cheaper, and for simple rectangular formats – sheet metal cutting. Milling is for parts that need a machined face, a groove, a seat or a tolerance held on thickness. Send us a drawing – we will match the technology to the shape, quantity and budget.
